Animatic assessment-2007 and how it relates to my project

This was my animatic for my Preproduction assessment 2007.

What's this doing here, you ask?

Well, I did ok on this assessment, and basically I wanted to highlight my attempt to create a mood/feeling within the panels- thou it's just scribble, I attempted to covey light/shade. I find the use of light/shade to be appealing as a composition tool and a chracter developing tool.

Same thing I tried with the Cult Fiction Comic pages below- The shading (hopefully) evokes a particular mood within the panel (and the surrounding panel composition too), to give something interesting for the eye to look at (and for the eye to follow along), and bring things forward and backwards in the compositional frame.

...but once again, let me stress the point I'm not an expert , I'm only learning and experimenting to find something I'm happy with. Sometimes the lighting changes slightly (in both the animatic and comic), but even Klaus Janson of Marvel and DC comic fame says something like it's sometimes better to do something that is asthetically appealling over something that may be correct but looks dull on the page in terms of it's relation to the other panels (something like that). Basically, I thought it'd look better :P

More concept art for project to come, but first I have to convince my lecturers tomorrow that I really want to do this and that it's worth doing.

Fingers Crossed.

Final Pencils for CFCA "Sea Dragon/BlueFlyer"

Just my last pages for the Seadragon/Blue Flyer issue. Initially a 12 pager, CFCA are looking to extend it to a longer issue shortly.

Anyways, I have previously posted pages 6,7 and 8, so please find below 9, 10 11, 12 and the possible cover page. My main focus was composition and layout, and making sure each panel was not only interesting to look at, but told the story and moved the viewer's eye though the page.
I realise I failed some of this in some of these pages, but the beauty for doing freelance work for Kevin at Cult Fiction comics is that he gives you free reign to move at your own pace and experiment with the layouts.

Possible Cover

Page 12 - the bottom section has been accidently cropped.

With all the pages above you can click to view larger- the little x's mean that that area is to be filled in black by the inker- although most times I shade it in anyway just so I can see by squintling if the composition and relation to tonal values is going to work or not.

I'm hoping to incorporate some superhero animation into my portfoilo for end of year.

Rough Concept Art for Project

These are just some ealry concepts for the film. (apart from the early storyboard panels that can be seen in a january post (forget which one :P)

Fiddling with early costume/looks. Form here I decided it was best to learn how to draw lions :P

Scorpion drawings- Wanted to make him cute and non-threatening in appearance.

Early Sedrick stuff- will play with this later.

Sketches of costumes from "The Sting"- Basically wanted to get an array of different hats, angles of hats, suit styles of different characters; just so I can whack some stuff on the animals later.

Truthfully, I did wonder if I should do a human- character script: but then I would lose the whole "punchline" and theme of the piece- and it would just look like "The Sting".

Liked the bottom left sketch for a character look...

Quick b/g concept for an establishment shot. Work on Backgrounds later.

Concept idea for Norton, the one above looks a bit too realistic. I settled on something like the ones below.

The Norton on the above right was suppose to be smuge looking, but my Girlfriend said he looks dopey...I think we're both right :( I'll work on it.
Early Rough rejected Norton concepts Below

Early concepts for the Rhino: He looks rougher in the blue collar gear than the suit...may give him the Robert Redford Cap ...

Rough designs for Chimp and other bar animals

4th Draft- 1st March 2008

Hopefully, this will make sense. From this draft the major thing I cut was the dialogue and the scene where Johnny (who is now just the Chimp) is beaten for info. Really, for a film that is suppose to be 3 minutes, that original shack down scene in the rain that was in the sceond draft could have been expanded into another short film.
It was then cut to just a small "cut to" scene which I was juggling to fit either before Norton arrives at the bar (chronological to story) or as a retrospect as to what had happened to the chimp before the conflict in the bar. ( as before the establishing shot of downtown 1930's chicago, but I thought in the end, the E.S was more important and hopefully the dialogue fills in the blanks.- Plus it follows the "story before the film" aspect I liked about 'American Gangster'.

plus I thought there was too much stuff taking up screen time before the film got to the "adrenaline moment" where the chimp is tossed into the place.

Synopsis:

Norton Lyons is the local Lieutenant in downtown 1930’s Chicago. Norton is crooked, and being a lion, he prey on the weak for a percentage of their profits. Sedrick the Zebra, the local bar owner is tired of Norton’s standover tactics so he decide to put a bounty out on Norton’s head.

Norton catches wind of the plan and decides to confront Sedrick in his Bar, believing that being at the top of the food chain means he can do what he likes, regardless of the other animal’s welfare.

However, Norton finds out the hard way that you can’t always win by being the biggest.

EXT. “Grasslands Saloon”- Downtown Chicago 1936- late Night

Pouring rain hammers down onto the cold dark pavements of a Chicago street. The streets a deserted, apart from the odd car driving quietly through the down pour. In the vague blackness of the night, faint light can be seen peering thru the gap in an old doorway of the bottom section of a rundown three storey building.

The bottom section of the building houses a small public bar. The outside of which is lined with scattered garbage cans and narrow lane ways.

The name of the bar, “Grasslands Saloon” is painted in a faded green at the side of the doorway across the brickwork.

Int. “Grasslands Saloon”- Downtown Chicago 1936- late Night

The bar is quiet with a smokey haze, which circles around the dim orange lights that hang low. The inner architecture of the bar is constructed from thick wooden beams with tables and chairs set out in no particular order. Booths line the brick interior wall. Dry grass is scattered across the floor.

SEDRICK the bar owner wipes over the bar and smiles at the laughing and camaraderie being shared in the bar.

Suddenly, NORTON is standing in the Doorway of the Bar, water drips from his jacket. The conversations die and all that can be heard is the rain.

Sedrick
I thought cats didn’t like water

Animals in the bar laugh. NORTON eyes off the animals, the laughter stops.

Norton
Funny, Horse. I’ve got one for you.

SEDRICK eyes NORTON off as NORTON disappears from the doorway.

NORTON appears suddenly in the doorway, holding up a beaten chimpanzee by the wrist.

Norton
How about, “Look what the Cat dragged in”!

SEDRICK’s eyes widen as NORTON tosses the Chimp, where he comes crashing down onto the top of a nearby table, scattering beer glasses and furniture.

Blood and drool trickles from the chimpanzee’s mouth. He is barley breathing.

SEDRICK
You son of a Bitch! What the hell do you think you’re...

NORTON
(Interrupting)
Shut up Sedrick! Word on the street is you’re trying to have me rubbed out.

SEDRICK is suddenly taken aback.

SEDRICK
You...I, I don’t know what you’re talking about.

NORTON
Really? I was shaking down the monkey here and found this...

NORTON pulls out a wet, blood spattered piece of paper from his coat.

... “Reward.5 grand for the fella who bumps off Norton Lyons. Head to Sedrick’s”.

NORTON screws up the flyer and tosses it at the out cold chimp.

...got something to say pony?

SEDRICK
I, I say bumping off Dirty cops that parade around like gangsters would be doing the community a great service.

NORTON
Oh I get it, the local hero, ey?
You think ‘cause you lived in brown grass and were given black and white stripes for camouflage that the world owes you a break, huh?
Well let me tell you something; you’re prey my friend, and I sit on top of the food chain- you and your grass eating friends sit under me; that’s how it is and that’s they way it’s gonna stay. And if you think some big miracle is going to come along, see your pretty flyer and change that, you’re wrong.

A RHINO, who had been viewing the proceedings from the corner of the room, stands up and approaches NORTON. The RHINO glares at NORTON, showing unwavering disdain.

NORTON
Let me guess, you saw the pretty flyer.

RHINO
(Growling)
Puuuudddddeeeee taaaaaaat!

NORTON smiles a wicked smile as he turns to walk away, suddenly he spins, punching the RHINO in the stomach followed by a slash to the RHINO’s face with his claws. The RHINO crashes to the floor. NORTON turns to SEDRICK.

Norton
You know what Zebra? All this excitement has made me hungry!

Suddenly NORTON pauses, his eyes widen and his head jolts. He clutches his heart and with one last gasp for air, he collapse in a heap on the floor.

The animals in the bar slowly pear over to where NORTON lies. Quiet shuffling can be heard coming from under NORTON’s body until suddenly, a tiny scorpion scurries out and crawls onto the top of the bar to face SEDRICK, who stares at him dumbfounded.

SCORPION
Umm, dreadfully sorry about that. He was rather loud, wasn’t he?

The SCORPION pulls out a small folded piece of paper from his jacket, and unwraps it to reveal a copy of the NORTON flyer. He shows it to SEDRICK.

...Do you mind if you write me a cheque? I can’t carry too many bills.

Sedrick
Err, yeah. Sure thing.

SCORPION
Could I also trouble you for a cocktail umbrella?
It’s rather wet outside.

Draft 3- Animation script

The main changes: less characters/dialogue and no longer in cockney slang:

Despite the lateness, the bar seems to have a small gathering of people inside.

SEDRICK the bar owner wipes glasses glances at empty bar stool

Sedrick
Hey, any of you fellas seen Johnny tonite?

EXT. “Grasslands Saloon”- Downtown Chicago 1936- late Night

TWO DARK FIGURES are scuffling in a narrow alleyway, lit on slightly from a busted street light. The LARGER FIGURE, in a soaked suit from the rain, punches the OTHER FIGURE mercilessly to the pavement.
A scrunched up sheet of paper falls out of the jacket of the OTHER FIGURE on the ground.
Int. “Grasslands Saloon”- Downtown Chicago 1936- late Night

NORTON standing in the Doorway of the Bar.

Sedrick
I thought cats didn’t like water

Animals in the bar laugh. NORTON looks around quickly quickly, scares, smiles

norton
You’re a funny pony ain’t you Sedrick? Where’s that sense of humour been hiding I wonder?

SEDRICK
Oh, I was just kidding around Norton...

Norton
No, No ...you were entertaining your little pals with your “new found” bravado...
NORTON pauses, then smiles

...but someone’s missing, aren’t they?

SEDRICK
What have you done with Johnny?!

Norton
My, my, haven’t we gotten brave? And to think I came down here to give you a present...

SEDRICK eyes NORTON off as NORTON disappears from the doorway.

NORTON appears suddenly in the doorway and with a growl, tossed JOHNNY through the doorway by the scruff of his neck, where he comes crashing down onto the top of a nearby table, scattering empty beer glasses and wooden pieces of the furniture.

Several customers in the bar all stand up suddenly, shocked and fearful of NORTON’s outburst.
Blood and drool trickles from JOHNNY’s mouth. He is badly beaten and barley breathing.

SEDRICK is Furious.

SEDRICK
You son of a...!

NORTON
(Interrupting)
Did you think I wouldn’t find out?!

SEDRICK is suddenly taken aback.

SEDRICK
You...you’ve got a lot of nerve Buster!

NORTON
I have a lot of nerve?!...

NORTON pulls out a wet, blood spattered piece of paper from his coat.

... “5 grand for the fella who bumps off Norton Lyons”.

NORTON screws up the flyer and calmly lobs it in the Direction of JOHNNY.

...That’s a federal offence pony!.

SEDRICK
I say bumping off Dirty cops that squeeze dough from honest animals trying to earn a living is a community service.

NORTON
Oh I get it, you think ‘cause you lived in brown grass and were given black and white stripes for camouflage that the world owes you a break, huh?

Well let me tell you something; you’re prey my friend. Lions don’t like searching all day for food, hence your little horsy body and your silly pyjamas...

NORTON pauses, reflects slightly on what he just said and smiles a little as if enjoying his own wit.

...I sit on top of the food chain- you and your little grass eating friends sit under me. And if you think some big miracle is going to come along, see your pretty flyer and change that, you’re even stupider than you look, which is pretty darn stupid ‘cause you look ridiculous!

A RHINO, who had been viewing the proceedings from the corner of the room, stands up and approaches NORTON. The RHINO glares at NORTON, showing unwavering disdain.

RHINO
(Growling)
Puuuudddddeeeee taaaaaaat!

Fight details

Norton
Any one else think they’re big enough to...

NORTON pauses, his eyes widen suddenly. NORTON clutches his heart, gasps for air and collapse in a heap on the floor.

The animals in the bar slowly pear over to where NORTON lies. Quiet shuffling can be heard coming from under NORTON’s body until suddenly, a tiny scorpion scurries out and crawls onto the top of the bar to face SEDRICK, who stares at him dumbfounded.

SCORPION
Umm, dreadfully sorry, he was rather loud and annoying, what?

The SCORPION pulls out a small folded piece of paper from his jacket, and unwraps it to reveal a copy of the NORTON flyer. He shows it to SEDRICK.

...Do you mind if I have that in bills please?

Sedrick
Err, yeah. Sure thing.

SCORPION
Could I also trouble you for a cocktail Umbrella?
It’s rather wet outside.

END
Some of the action details were incomplete in this draft. Draft 4 came about mainly because when re-reading the dialogue before re-typing the action, I found that some things the characters said didn't make sense in regards to their answers and reactions. Plus, I had a bit of trouble inserting the scene where Johnny (formerly Arthur) gets beaten up by Norton. - I shortened this scene, then made the hard decision of cutting the scene altogether - (sorry, kinda rushing this post, Ive been working all day and I'm a bit stressed.)
Anyways, the progression from this to draft 4 will make more sense than my frantic explaination.

End section of Draft 2

Hey, Just thought I'd post the rest of Draft 2 before I post draft 3 (and 4 wish I finished tonight.) This draft totalled around 8 pages, with draft 3 being cut to 5-6, and draft 4 which I finished tonight totaling 3 and a half.

Basically I wanted to get the story down to maround 3 mintues to be a workable animation. This meant I had to sacrifice alot of the characters and dialogue, but hopefully the story still works, which I beleive it does (until draft 5 comes along :P)

Anyways, part 3:

SEDRICK is now furious.
SEDRICK
What the Bloody Hell have you done to Terry?!

NORTON
Oh, you mean the Kit Kat Chunky here?...

NORTON nods his head in the Direction of TERRY.

NORTON
...let’s just say he’s a sign of things to come if you lot don’t pull into line.

SEDRICK
Pull into...?! You’re mad Norton!

NORTON
I’m mad? The world isn’t always Black and White my friend...

NORTON pauses, reflects slightly on what he just said and smiles a little as if enjoying his own wit.
...You’re a bit “mad” yourself aren’t you, you naughty stripy horse.

SEDRICK is suddenly taken aback.

SEDRICK
I don’t know what you’re talking about.

NORTON
...Really?
NORTON pulls out the flyer from his pocket.

I know your little game here, Zebra.

NORTON stands toe to toe with SEDRICK, staring him sharply in the face. His smirk fades to anger as he realises SEDRICK is not phased.

SEDRICK
This neighbourhood is sick of you, and it’s about time you picked on someone your own size...

NORTON growls.

NORTON
I own this neighbourhood. And that ain’t changing... Especially by some “grass eater” who went and grew himself a pair of bollocks!

A RHINO, who had been viewing the proceedings from a dark corner of the room, approaches NORTON from behind. The RHINO taps NORTON on the shoulder.

RHINO
You got a problem with Grass eaters?

NORTON turns around. His expression is cold.

NORTON
What’s your go, china?

RHINO
I’ve come for the reward.

NORTON
Oh, sorry, you may want to see a doctor 'bout that mince pie of yours...

NORTON roars as he swiftly grabs the RHINO by its nose horn, and with his free hand, punches him in the ribs. As the RHINO folds in half, NORTON, grabs the RHINO’s ears, knees him in the stomach and tosses him across a nearby table.

FRANKLIN and TOMMY attempt to take NORTON to the floor by jumping on his back, but NORTON, managing to hold their weight, throws TOMMY off first, and then using his arms, rips FRANKLIN off and slams him into the bar.

NORTON, now foaming and spitting at the mouth, reaches across the bar and grabs SEDRICK around the throat, pulling him off his feet.
NORTON roars:

NORTON
You may think your reward will solve your problems “Grass Eater” but I’m too big to be beaten by the likes of you or your so-called Bounty Hunters! I’m top of the food chain here!
And I da..ahgh?!?!...irk!?!

NORTON pauses, his eyes widen suddenly. His grasp around SEDRICK’s neck releases, and with both hands he clutches his heart, gasps for air and collapse in a heap on the floor.

SEDRICK slowly peer over to where NORTON lies. Quiet shuffling can be heard coming from under NORTON’s body until suddenly, a small scorpion scurries out and crawls onto the top of the bar to face SEDRICK, who stares at him dumbfounded.

SCORPION
Umm, dreadfully sorry to spoil the fight. He was rather loud and annoying, what?

Sedrick
(Still dumbfounded)
Err...yeah...

Scorpion
Oh, right. I’m sorry...

The SCORPION pulls out a small folded piece of paper from his jacket, and unwraps it to reveal a copy of the NORTON flyer. He shows it to SEDRICK.

...Do you mind if I get that in cash please? And could I also trouble you for a cocktail Umbrella?
It’s rather wet outside.

Just practicing with colouring, these pictures featured on Valentine's day cards for my Girlfriend Libby.

I guess colour will be a consideration once I get the script out of the way.

Next section of Second draft script from Oct 2007

Ok, next section of the script that I'm thinking about hacking to get to the "guts" of the story I wish to tell for this year's animation. (oh, just ignore the reggie comic above, just wanted a random pic in there.)

Oh, thanks for the comment regarding the Toon Boom Digital Pro, that was excellent info, especially for a guy who has very little patience for the internet and the blogging/computer world...I spent a year working purely with Maya for 3D stuff that I had no idea what is actually being used out there in regard to 2D animation. Massive help, thank you.
(oh, and now Im extremely self consious that someone else is reading my random thoughts on my uni projects :P)

Anyways, the next scene is a continuation of the previous fist part of my script (posted January 31st 2008) in which the local guys at the bar are waiting on their mate terry to arrive to discuss something but unbeknown to them, A large figure (Norton the Lion) has beaten Terry for information and stumbled across a "wanted" poster with his picture on it. As I said, I want to cut to the confrontation that you will see in this draft so that the focus is just on Norton and Sedrick (as per those storyboard ideas from last semester) and so that it's like the viewer is some customer sitting in the bar and all of a sudden an arguement has broken out and you have to piece together where it stems from. (well that's the plan anyways...)

Part 2 second draft:

Int. “Grasslands BAR”- Downtown London- late Night

TOMMY, SEDRICK, and FRANKLIN stare at the NORTON flyer TOMMY holds in his Hoof.

Tommy
I don’t think this is gonna work.
FRANKLIN
Don’t tell me you’re starting to ‘ave second thoughts Tommy?

Tommy
Well, who in their right mind would seriously have a go at ‘im, ay? He’s a LION, Franklin. All things being equal, We’re food to the bastard...

SEDRICK sinks his head and slowly closes his eyes. Realising he is being looked at for a response, he quickly cheers up.

Sedrick
Lads, We Zebras ain’t renowned for turning the tables on our predators either...I mean what chance does a small black and white horse have against large meat-eating cats with big claws and teeth? Mother Nature really took the piss out of us there...
But these are modern times now. Are you lads happy with being on the Bottom of the Food chain?

Both TOMMY and FRANKLIN shake their heads.

I know you two hate having to pay Norton every Friday so he don’t trash our businesses as much as I do, right?

SEDRICK holds the flyer up to TOMMY and FRANKLIN.

Then, we put this bounty on his head and every big animal this side of the Thames will roll in for the money...

TOMMY
And if he finds out?

SEDRICK pauses.

SEDRICK
We can’t cower to his threats any more lads...

There is a pause.

NORTON
You’re open late for a Monday Sedrick?

The 3 animals are startled as they discover NORTON standing in the Doorway of the Bar. TOMMY quickly snatches the flyer off the bar top, rams it into his mouth and swallows. FRANKLIN eyes him quickly before looking back to NORTON. SEDRICK, though scared, tries to remain composed.

SEDRICK
What...what are you doin’ here Norton? I paid you last Friday.

NORTON
I’m not ‘ere for bread and honey Sedrick...I actually have a little present for you that I’d like to share.

SEDRICK eyes NORTON off as NORTON disappears from the doorway.

Suddenly,SEDRICK’s eyes widen with fear as NORTON reappears and with a growl, tosses TERRY through the doorway by the scruff of his neck, where he comes crashing down onto the top of a nearby table, scattering empty beer glasses and wooden pieces of the furniture.
Blood and drool trickles from TERRY’s mouth. He is badly beaten and barely breathing.

NORTON laughs a deep, boisterous laugh.

Assessment using Toon Boom Solo: Punisher trailer

Ok, this assessment was based around designing layouts for animated scenes from storyboards. I love storyboarding so I hope that can be seen in this. In this film version, Im hopeless when it comes to formatting so I couldnt get a small enough file with music to fit on Youtube,m but if you're familiar with Pantera's "Drag the Waters", you'll get the idea.
This was using Toon Boom Solo...though that was a little difficult to use...flash or solo?

Assessment: 2D Acting/Gesture 1st Year

This is probably the only chance I've had to animate a 2D character ...waaaaay back at the end of 2006.
I have a few concerns:
1. What if I suck, and I can't animate as well as this (and this isn't great by the way, I just think I might not be able to even reach THIS...:S)
2. How am I going to get the pencil stuff to the claned stuff? Flash? Solo?

Anyways, The only thing I liked about this animation was some of the poses. So fingers crossed that might get me over the line .
